The Newest Private Education Center on El Salvador’s Coast: Playa Vida Learning Opens Enrollment in El Zonte
A new kind of learning has arrived on El Salvador’s coast.
Playa Vida Learning, now open in El Zonte, is reimagining what education can look like for families seeking an alternative to the traditional classroom. Rooted in curiosity, community, and real-world experiences, the center focuses on developing not just academic understanding—but also emotional intelligence, creativity, and self-awareness.
We sat down with the founder to learn more about the inspiration behind this private education center, its philosophy, and the vibrant community taking shape in El Zonte.
What inspired you to create Playa Vida Learning, and why in El Zonte?
What inspired me to create Playa Vida Learning? Well, first off—I have a daughter. She represents a huge driving force in my life. Secondly, I’m a lifelong learner. I believe that learning how to learn is one of the most important skills for young people.
“Am I Teachable?” This is a self directed question that we use at Playa Vida Learning everyday. This kids must be self aware to answer that question… very important.
Why El Zonte? On the coast we have 3 options – La Libertad, El Tunco and El Zonte … El Zonte wins easily because of the mellow family vibe, the consistent surf and community involvement.
What is the vision or philosophy that guides the school?
We focus on teaching an overarching theme each learning cycle.
Some of our past and ongoing themes include:
Accountability • Integrity • Creativity • Kindness • Group dynamics • Delayed gratification • Curiosity • Fun • Emotional regulation • Leadership • Entrepreneurship • Respect (hierarchical awareness) • Perspective • Logic • Patience
This cycle, our theme is Responsibility. We are a project based learning center and therefore feel that real life skills are an important part of the learning process.

Who is Playa Vida designed to serve, and what kind of families do you see joining?
Playa Vida Learning is designed for homeschool families who want more control over their children’s education. PVL is for both expats and locals who want their children to gain holistic heart centered knowledge right here on the coast.
What makes the learning experience at Playa Vida different from a traditional school?
Playa Vida Learning is personalized and flexible, with space to follow a child’s curiosity, adapt to evolving needs, and integrate real-world experiences. Assessments focus on growth and mastery rather than grades, ensuring that progress is meaningful and authentic.
Our approach values cultural connection, environmental awareness, and collaborative relationships between families and educators.
In essence, Playa Vida Learning offers an education rooted in freedom, creativity, and community partnership—an alternative to the standardized, compliance-driven model of other schools.

For parents considering Playa Vida, what should they know about the community and environment their children will be part of?
Parents should know that we want to get the kids moving. Outdoor games are part of our learning curriculum. We want to remain self-aware and teachable, we want to be healthy, and we want to promote critical thinking and use real-world experiences to keep our kids grounded.

Playa Vida Learning is another example of the creative, community-driven projects shaping life on El Salvador’s coast—where families, educators, and entrepreneurs are coming together to build a more connected and intentional way of living.
