The eruption produced pyroclastic (lava, ashes and volcanic rocks) flows with a volume 10 times higher than those generated during the eruption of Vesuvius, in 19 AD. The ash and volcanic materials from the explosion enriched the soil, leading to the fertile grounds that support the lush vegetation and diverse wildlife around the lake today.

The location name is Apulo and Ilopango Lake. Apulo is one of the 40 surrounding towns around the lake. In nahuatl, Apulo stands for “location that sinks in water” in honor of the eruption.
