1. Ruta de Las Flores

Ruta de las Flores (Route of the Flowers) is a scenic drive that winds through the coffee-growing region of El Salvador. Mainly, it covers the west side of the country, specially Sonsonate and Ahuachapán Department. The route gets its name from the colorful flowers that line the road and the charming, colonial towns along the way. You can stop at the various small towns to enjoy local crafts, coffee, and cuisine. Ruta de las Flores includes visits to coffee plantations, where you can learn about the coffee-making process and enjoy some of the best coffee in the world. 

You can also get a taste of local gastronomy as well as some adrenaline rush with ziplines and buggy rides. This is a great route to take if you want to experience the natural beauty of El Salvador while also getting a taste of the local culture.

2. Ruta Arqueológica

El Salvador is home to many Mayan ruins, and the Ruta Arqueológica (Archeological Route) takes you to some of the most impressive sites. This touristic route includes visits to Tazumal, Joya de Cerén – aka The Pompeii of the Americas, and San Andrés. 

You will be able to see pyramids, ceremonial temples, playgrounds and much more. You will also get to observe details of the daily life of the Maya, Pipil and Lenca cultures through what they left behind.

As if that was not enough, some of the spaces that make up this route have even been certified as cultural heritage by UNESCO in 1993, including Joya de Cerén, which has vestiges of civilizations that inhabited the territory for more than 1,200 years BC.

3. Ruta de Playa

4. Ruta Paraíso Artesanal

Ruta Paraíso Artesanal, which translates to ‘Artisanal Paradise Route,’ is a cultural and tourist route in El Salvador that showcases the traditional hand craftsmanship and folk art of the country. The route spans several towns and cities in the departments of Cabañas, Cuscatlán and Chalatenango — let’s say, the northern part of the country.

The route was established in 2017 by the Salvadoran Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with local artisans and cultural organizations, with the aim of promoting and preserving the country’s rich cultural heritage. The route features over 80 artisan workshops, museums, and cultural centers, where visitors can learn about traditional crafts such as weaving, pottery, woodcarving, and embroidery.

Some of the highlights of the Ruta Paraíso Artesanal include the town of Cihuatán, known for its sugar cane production and local rum, Ron Cihuatán. Other towns in the route are Colima, La Palma, San Ignacio.

La Palma, located in Chalantenango, is very popular due to the town’s fairs and local markets that take place. It is a colorful, beautiful town that transmits pure joy, know for its wood craftsmanship.

Ruta Paraíso Artesanal offers a unique and authentic cultural experience for visitors to El Salvador, highlighting the country’s diverse traditions and creativity.
