What is ‘Surf City’ in El Salvador?

El Salvador… the home of Surf City… times two! The first Surf City spans the area of La Libertad department on the country’s Pacific coast, which is home to some of the most popular surf spots in El Salvador, such as El Tunco, El Sunzal, and La Bocana. Surf City 2 is located on the east side of the country, in Punta Mango in the Department of Usulután.

The name ‘Surf City’ has been used to describe various beach towns and cities around the world that are popular with surfers. The term is often associated with places that have a vibrant surfing culture, good waves, and a laid-back beach lifestyle. Here in El Salvador, the Surf City initiative aims to boost tourism and create jobs in the region by promoting El Salvador as a safe and attractive destination for surfers and other tourists.

The Government’s Plans For Surf City, El Salvador

President Nayib Bukele has divided Surf City 2, into 2 stages.

Stage 1 involves 13 kms of highway construction that connects Punta Mango to El Cuco, in the Department of San Miguel. This highway will bring around 600 direct employment opportunities to local people, allowing easy access between towns and bringing development opportunities for businesses.

Stage 2, involves another 15 kms of highway that will connect Punta Mango to El Espino Beach, located in the same Department as Punta Mango.

The highway will have underground power connection, a bike lane, as well as viewpoints for tourists to stop and admire El Salvador’s exceptionally beauitful coastline.
